Central Time covers a large portion of the US population, including major cities like Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and Minneapolis. Developers and system administrators in these areas regularly translate UTC log timestamps and cron schedules to local time.
CST is 6 hours behind UTC. A server event logged at 14:00 UTC happened at 8:00 AM Central. During daylight saving time, CDT is only 5 hours behind UTC, so that same 14:00 UTC event would read as 9:00 AM local.
UTC has no seasonal adjustment. The Central zone shifts in mid-March and early November. Be especially careful with scheduled jobs: a cron set for 12:00 UTC will trigger at 6 AM CST in winter but 7 AM CDT in summer.
