New York and Tokyo form one of the world’s most important financial corridors. Currency traders, investment banks, and multinational insurers rely on precise EST–JST conversion. The Tokyo Stock Exchange opens at 9 AM JST, which is 7 PM EST the previous evening (or 8 PM EDT in summer).
The standard offset is 14 hours: JST (UTC+9) minus EST (UTC−5). When it’s 8 AM Monday in New York, it’s 10 PM Monday in Tokyo. During US daylight saving time the gap narrows to 13 hours because Eastern shifts to EDT (UTC−4) while Japan stays fixed.
Overlap is limited but better than the West Coast. A 7–9 AM Eastern meeting falls at 9–11 PM JST — outside normal hours, but common in finance. Alternatively, 6–8 PM Eastern is 8–10 AM the next day in Japan, catching the Tokyo morning.
